Vermont Historical Society announces new exhibit: “Fairbanks Scales: Weighing the World” May 30

The Vermont Historical Society has installed a new exhibit in the Vermont History Museum’s Local History Gallery, “Fairbanks Scales: Weighing the World,” curated by the Saint Johnsbury History & Heritage Center. Now open to the public, this exhibit will be on display through July 27, 2024. VHS will host an opening reception for the exhibit on Saturday, May 30th between 1:00PM and 3:00PM at the Vermont History Museum at 109 State Street in Montpelier.

“Weighing the World” is an exploration into the technological and economic impact of the Fairbanks Scale Company of St. Johnsbury. In 1830, Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale. Subsequently, he and his brothers, Erastus and Joseph, began selling these scales that allowed farmers and businesses to more easily and accurately weigh their goods. In the years that followed, the company quickly expanded, selling their products across New England, the United States, and internationally. This exhibit will examine the impact of the company from its first factory in St. Johnsbury to how it eventually transformed the world.
