Central VT Youth Opportunity Forum to take place in Northfield Jan 9

Vermont Business Magazine Community members throughout the Central Vermont region are encouraged to attend the upcoming Youth Opportunity Regional Forum on January 9, 2024, from 5:30-7pm in the cafeteria of the Northfield Middle and High School to discuss how we can improve opportunities for youth in our communities.  The forum will be co-facilitated by a local youth facilitator and the Vermont Council on Rural Development. Free pizza and desserts will be served so that participants can join right after school or work.

So far, five regional forums have taken place across the state along with several interviews with various affinity groups. The Central VT forum was originally scheduled for July 1, 2023, at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, but was canceled due to the historic flooding.

These regional Youth Opportunity Forums are a chance for people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences to share their ideas on a range of topics, including education, job training, community connection, youth well-being, mentoring, and more. This input along with the results of a statewide survey will be shared with the Future of Vermont Action Team who will make concrete policy and programmatic recommendations for how Vermont can better support youth.

On January 9, youth and adults will come together to answer the questions: What are the success stories and bright spots today in Vermont? What are the current gaps, challenges, and concerns our youth are struggling with? What is your vision for how we can best support our youth in achieving their ambitions?

After attending a forum, one recent participant said, “Thanks for focusing on the youth in our state. They are a disempowered and untapped demographic, and it has been wonderful to see how various sectors are ensuring they have a voice and a role in decisions and actions that affect them.”

The “Vermont Youth Opportunity Initiative” emerged through The Vermont Propositio

n Initiative which was coordinated by the Vermont Council on Rural Development in 2021 through input from thousands of Vermonters.
