Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will hold his second annual Youth Chess Day this weekend on Saturday, April 20 at Vermont State University in Randolph for students grades 1-12. This follows last year’s inaugural event where 130 students from all 14 Vermont counties came out to learn and compete.
“Now, you may be wondering: ‘Why organize a chess day for young Vermonters?’” said Sanders. “To my mind, the answer is simple. Chess provides an opportunity for young people to improve their intellectual skills, their ability to strategize, think ahead, and focus. It is also a great way to build friendships and community – not to mention have fun. In these difficult times, it is more important than ever that we ensure young people have more access to opportunities to grow and play – not less. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, I hope to see you this weekend.”
The day will kick off at 11:00 a.m. with a Learn-to-Play Session for grades 1-8, followed by a break for lunch, which will be served free for all participants. In the afternoon, players will test their skills at the Recreational Tournament. Students with all levels of experience are welcome and highly encouraged to attend. Sanders will speak with the participants and their families about the game as well as education, after school opportunities, civic engagement, community, and more.
Students interested in registering for the event can do so HERE. Advance registration is required.
