Vermont Business Magazine Champlain College celebrated the resilience of its 2021 graduates with a series of virtual and in-person ceremonies at its 143rd Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 15th. The college awarded honorary doctorates to speakers Vermont Governor Phil Scott and Vermont Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD, for their leadership and lifesaving work during the coronavirus pandemic, and featured student speakers Angela Richard, Robbin Suggs Williams, and Paul Leendertse.
Vermont Business Magazine Mayor Miro Weinberger and City officials encouraged the public to explore and use the new online permitting portal opened this week. The new portal, available at https://burlingtonvt.viewpointcloud.com/, will make it easier to easier to get and track the permits required by the City for work on your home or at a building site –including permits for windows, decks, siding, roofing, or other electric, mechanical, building, zoning, right of way, and Fire permits.
Vermont Business Magazine The Fanny Allen Foundation has awarded $10,000 to CVOEO to support the organization’s food shelves serving Addison, Franklin and Grand Isle counties. These funds will be used to support the efforts of Addison Community Action Food Shelf and NorthWest Family Foods to improve food access and support advocacy and educational efforts. NorthWest Family Foods and Addison Community Action Food Shelf respectively serve approximately 6,000 and 1,000 households annually.
Vermont Business Magazine The new tenant at Springfield Shopping Plaza at 2 Chester Rd, Springfield, VT has opened the 400th Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in the United States. The space is approximately 30,000 square feet. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet replaced Peebles and an adjacent vacant space in the plaza.

Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott today announced that because Vermont has already hit its necessary vaccination threshold – with now over 70% of the population receiving at least one dose – it will move into Step 3 of the Vermont Forward Plan more than two weeks ahead of the anticipated schedule. The VDH is reporting today 58 new cases of COVID-19, with deaths holding at 252.

The AOE is not recommending revocation at this time.
Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott today announced that because Vermont has already hit its necessary vaccination threshold with over 60 percent of the population receiving at least one dose, it will move into Step 3 of the Vermont Forward Plan more than two weeks ahead of schedule. Step 3 of the Vermont Forward plan removes the testing requirement for travel and increases event and gathering capacity restrictions. The new gathering sizes will allow for one unvaccinated person per 50 square feet, up to 300, plus any number of vaccinated people for indoor events; and 900 people, plus any number of vaccinated people, outdoors.
Vermont Business Magazine US Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announced Friday that Applied Research Associates of Randolph has received an award totaling $5,237,915 from the US Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. This initial award gets work under way on a total contract worth more than $9 million to develop and install a transportation loading system inside the Army’s Frost Effects Research Facility in Hanover, NH, the country’s largest refrigerated warehouse designed to investigate, test, and evaluate the effects of extremely cold ambient and ground temperatures on different kinds of roadways and airstrips.
by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine Today, Mayor Miro Weinberger announced that the city will resume its search for Burlington’s next permanent Police Chief. One year ago, Mayor Weinberger suspended the Police Chief search due to the uncertain circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of re-starting the search after the mayoral election in March. After stakeholder and public input in May, the mayor will announce members of a full search committee, who will begin the interview process in mid-July. Weinberger’s goal is to forward an appointment to the Council for confirmation in September.
