City Market welcomes Executive Chef

City Market’s General Manager, John Tashiro, recently announced the addition of Michael Clauss to the Co-op’s centralized Purchasing and Merchandising team. Clauss will be the Co-op’s first Executive Chef and will be responsible for ensuring consistency, value and innovation in their hot and cold food bars, ready to eat meals and value-added products across both Co-op stores.

Clauss is well-known in and beyond the Vermont food scene; he is most recently the owner of his own business, Michael Clauss Events. In addition, he’s worked as Executive Chef for Burlington’s Bluebird Restaurant Group; Chef de Cuisine at the Junction at the Essex; Executive Chef at the Daily Planet; and Executive Chef for Feast and Fete Catering at Restaurant Daniel in New York. Clauss is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a former Chef Instructor at New England Culinary Institute.

Tashiro notes that, “Michael is an exciting addition to our team! He is well-versed in how to incorporate local products into our menu of offerings. Michael’s knowledge and skills will allow the Co-op to innovate, support the local food system and ensure we’re meeting our Members’ and customers’ needs. We’re ready for Michael to partner with stakeholders both inside and outside the Co-op to build on our already delicious and affordable options and create new ones with our existing team.”

Clauss joins a dedicated and professional team, including Lynn Ellen Schimoler, Director of Purchasing and Merchandising; Steven Obranovich, Prepared Foods Manager for the Downtown Store; Norah Cunha, Prepared Foods Manager for the South End Store; and Jamie Lewis, Meat & Seafood Manager.

City Market plans to open their second location in the South End of Burlington next month, right before Thanksgiving. Their South End store will be open 7am-9pm every day with an in-store locally-owned fresh juice bar by Juice for the People; local, organic and conventional grocery options; outdoor murals, a teaching kitchen, and community space.
