Norwich University names Lawrence J Rooney new Chief of Security

A former police detective, assistant director of public safety at Middlebury College, and, most recently, assistant commandant in the Office of Student Life at Norwich University, Rooney brings 30 years of experience in law enforcement and higher education to this pivotal role.

Rooney received a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Master’s degree in criminal justice from Western New England College (now Western New England University). He is also a 1986 graduate of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council, Police Academy, located in Plymouth, Mass.

“Chief Rooney has a unique background in law enforcement, campus safety and working in dynamic higher education settings. As is the case with every university, the challenges of providing a safe, friendly campus are many and varied,” Chief Administrative Officer David Magida said. “I have full confidence that Chief Rooney will meet all of these challenges in a professional, calm, helpful and experienced manner.”
