As part of an ongoing voter awareness series at Saint Michael’s College, a visiting speaker will explore the philosophy of voting during a lecture on Monday, Oct. 14.
Julia Maskivker, Ph.D.,
is a Political Science Professor at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, who specializes in political theory. Her presentation, titled
“The Duty to Vote,” is a reference to one of her latest books about democratic theory and mass participation. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Roy Room on the 3rd floor of the College’s Dion Family Student Center.
Maskivker’s talk is one of a number of events planned on campus this semester in advance of the U.S. Presidential Election in November. The event, which
is free and open to the public, is being sponsored by the College’s Division of Edmundite Mission.
Maskivker’s expertise includes two areas of research in political theory and philosophy: democratic theory and the ethics of participation as well as
theories of justice and equality, with an emphasis on the philosophy of labor. Her book – which will form the basis of her talk – investigates whether voting should be seen as an ethical duty or a mere right. She explores the foundations of various democratic
traditions and their differing perspectives on the morality of voting. Her central claim is that competent voting should be seen as grounded in a duty "of common pursuit" to support good governance and help fellow citizens minimize injustice.
Maskivker holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and a BA from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
