Health Care Advocacy: Acupuncture for veterans and military

Tue, 06/11/2019 - 2:59am -- tim

Vermont Business Magazine Licensed Acupuncturists, Jonathan Fleming and Kerry Boyle from Integrative Acupuncture in Montpelier attended a legislative advocacy event in Washington D.C., June 1-3 to gain support to mandate acupuncture access for all veterans and military personnel. Over 300 acupuncturists from across the country descended on Capitol Hill to ask their state representatives to support HR 1182- Acupuncture For Heros Act, which mandates veterans and military can access this non pharmacological approach to pain management.

Acupuncture has been proven and accepted to be an alternative to opiate prescriptions for pain. In addition, veterans benefit from using acupuncture for P.T.S.D., traumatic brain injury, and headaches. Many veterans are currently covered to access acupuncture, this bill would assure this coverage would be mandated and expanded to include active military personnel.

Fleming and Boyle met with representatives from Senator Bernie Sanders in his D.C. office to ask for his support in presenting a companion bill in the senate for this bill. They also participated in a Wellness Fair on the Hill where over 150 free acupuncture treatments were provided to staffers and legislators to experience acupuncture for general stress.
