Vermont Business Magazine Gardener’s Supply Company, the employee-owned purveyor of great garden gear, has completed the purchase of its first garden center in New Hampshire. The acquisition was first announced in September. Longacres’ Nursery Center in Lebanon, has been the preeminent garden center in the Upper Valley for more than 40 years. The acquisition marks the beginning of what’s planned to be a significant expansion for the Burlington, VT-based company. Currently closed for renovations, the new Longacres is scheduled to reopen January 22, 2018.
In addition to a robust catalog and e-commerce business, Gardener’s Supply Company currently has two successful garden centers in Burlington and Williston, VT. Gardener’s Supply President Jim Feinson says it’s been a privilege to help the Longacre family with a business succession plan: “The Longacres have operated this wonderful business for four decades, and are a tremendous asset to the Upper Valley community. We are gratified to have the opportunity to build on the family legacy.”
Longacre family members agreed that they wanted their business to continue as a garden center, rather than let developers decide its fate. Joe Longacre says he’s particularly pleased that Gardener’s Supply Company is owned by its employees and community-minded, too.
“They’ve been the perfect partner in this transition and have the same, strong commitment to customers that we’ve had for years.” In addition to encouraging employee volunteerism, Gardener’s donates 8 percent of all profits to causes that make the world a better place through gardening.
Gardener’s Supply Company closed the doors of Longacres’ for a few days in January 2018 to reorganize. But the Retail General Manager for Gardener’s Supply, Pat Pearsall, says sweeping changes are not in the cards.
“Our goal is to build on the success of the Longacre family. We see this as an ownership transition for the employees and an opportunity to bring two successful businesses together to build an even better experience for the upper valley community. Different communities ask for different things, and so we’ll listen to the customers and adapt to meet their expectations.”
Gardener’s Supply Company plans to acquire additional garden centers in the near future and is actively seeking a fourth location, though the company has not yet disclosed where. Pat Pearsall adds, “Our primary focus is on getting the Lebanon store to the next level. But we are simultaneously seeking our next opportunity, particularly in the Northeast.”
