The Stern Center for Language and Learning announces that Nancy Mather, Ph.D., and Louisa Moats, Ed.D., will co-present a full-day symposium on literacy, dyslexia, and education on Friday, September 27, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier, Vermont.
Drs. Mather and Moats will discuss how children learn to read, why some children have difficulty learning, and what teachers and parents can do to help. This presentation will bust myths about reading, unravel the mystery of dyslexia (believed to affect as many as 1 in 5 individuals), discuss the state of literacy education and teacher preparation, and show how reading and spelling are connected and can be taught in tandem.
Both Mather and Moats have expertise in dyslexia, reading, learning, behavior and child development. They have written numerous books, peer-reviewed articles and assessment tools for educators and clinicians who work with individuals who experience learning difficulties.
Mather is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her most recent book on learning disabilities is Learning Disabilities and Challenging Behaviors (Mather, Goldstein & Eklund, 2015) and her most recent book on dyslexia is Essentials of Dyslexia: Assessment and Intervention (Mather & Wendling, 2012). She is the co-author of one of the most widely available diagnostic tools used by psychologists and educators nationally, the Woodcock-Johnson IV. Most recently, Mather helped create an in-depth online professional learning program, the Comprehensive Reading Course for Educators (MindPlay) with Stern Center Founder and President Blanche Podhajski, Ph.D., along with Janice Sammons, Ph.D., of Arizona, and fellow Vermonter Marilyn Varricchio, M.Ed.
Moats was a licensed psychologist in Vermont for 15 years, specializing in evaluations and consultations with individuals of all ages who experienced difficulties with reading, spelling, writing, and oral language. She served as an adjunct professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and as a clinical associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas, Houston. She spent four years a site director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Early Interventions Project in Washington, D.C. Moats is the author or coauthor of numerous publications on reading instruction, the professional development of teachers, and the relationship between language, reading and spelling, including Speech to Print; Straight Talk About Reading; and Basic Facts About Dyslexia. She created the professional learning program Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (Sopris West). She also has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters, and policy papers, including the American Federation of Teachers’ “Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science,” the Learning First Alliance’s “Every Child Reading: A Professional Development Guide,” and Reading First’s “Blueprint for Professional Development.”
