To celebrate and promote wellness through outdoor recreation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (Blue Cross) will once again offer its popular Mountain Days program in May and June. This year’s events combine a longstanding community tradition in Brattleboro with two brand new events in Vermont. All Mountain Days are weather permitting, and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (no pre-registration required). There will be free t-shirts, raffle prizes, snacks and water, and the first 100 hikers at each Mountain Day will also receive a free picnic lunch.
May 11 – 19th Annual Mountain Day at Mt. Wantastiquet. This event, which has become a Mother’s Day weekend tradition for many families, is sponsored by the Windham County Community Advisory Board of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont. Participants can chose to hike up Mt. Wantastiquet or enjoy a lovely riverside walk.
June 1 – 1st Annual Mountain Day at Burke Mountain Red Trail in Burke. Hikers of all ages and abilities will be able to choose the path that best suits them, including an access road to the summit for families with strollers.
June 9 – 1st Annual Mountain Day at Mt. Anthony in Bennington. The trails to the summit of 2,346- foot Mt. Anthony provide a great kickoff to the hiking season.
“We’re delighted to add two new events to our tradition in Brattleboro,” notes Megan Peek, director of community relations and health education. “Hiking, especially with family and friends, is a wonderful way to improve fitness, spend quality time together and enjoy the beauty of our state.” Peek cites the leadership of the Windham County Community Advisory Board in creating the annual hike up Mt. Wantastiquet as the inspiration for establishing hikes in other regions of the state. “We’ve had many people, and especially families, come back year after year to Brattleboro. Some hikers who first attended as kids are now able to bring their own children to the event!” Peek adds that she hopes the other Mountain Days will take root and become annual traditions as well.
Since the events are weather permitting, Peek encourages anyone interested in attending a Mountain Day to check out the website or social media channels (see below) closer to the date.
