Annual Celebration Highlights Fact that “Black History Does Not End When March Begins”
Burlington, VT Black History does not begin when January ends, or end when March begins. Burlington School District (BSD) Superintendent Yaw Obeng and the members of DEALT cordially invite any and all to attend the 3rd Annual Beyond Black History Month celebration on Friday, March 13th at 5:30 PM at Burlington High School (BHS). The event will feature presentations, breakout sessions, and exhibits from BSD students reflecting on Black History Month and what they been studying throughout the year. Student-centered participation includes a presentation from Flynn Elementary Student Council, poetry from two members of Muslim Girls Making Change, performances from the C.P. Smith choir, poetry from MBK/MSK Burlington, an interactive painting activity with Early Education, and more.
The event will also offer a variety of breakout sessions including a Restorative Practices circle on racism, a student-led panel on race in America, and a discussion on racial bias in policing led by former BSD Board Chair Stephanie Seguino.
“The goal of this event has always been to continue the community’s momentum in expanding dialogues, shifting perspectives, and boldly addressing present-day injustices,” said Superintendent Obeng. “This year, we're working hard to plan more workshops, breakout sessions, and presentations. I cannot wait for a great evening of celebration and education. Three years in and going strong.”
Attendees will also be able to visit exhibit tables from a variety of community partners working to promote equity and inclusion, including CEDO AmeriCorps, Edmunds Middle School ‘Race Up’ program, and the BHS International Club.
