USCIS to Welcome 69 New Citizens at Castleton University Fine Arts Center

-A A +A

CASTLETON, Vt. — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present 69 citizenship candidates to the U.S. District Court for Vermont at a ceremony to take place at Castleton University Fine Arts Center on Tuesday.  The Honorable Colleen A. Brown, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Chief Judge, will preside over the ceremony and administer the Oath of Allegiance to America’s newest citizens.

The 69 citizenship candidates, ranging in ages 20 to 79, originate from the following 27 countries:  Australia, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Bhutan, Burma, Burundi, Canada, People’s Republic of China, Congo, France, Germany, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Philippines, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress.   After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S.citizens, including the right to vote.  During fiscal year 2016, just over 750,000 people were naturalized at ceremonies throughout the country and around the world, including over 650 individuals through the St. Albans field office.

USCIS encourages new citizens and guests to share their naturalization ceremony experiences and photos through social media, using the hashtag #newUScitizen.

The next Vermont ceremony welcoming new citizens will take place August 4 at Rutland’s Paramount Theater.  An advisory will be provided as date nears.
