Vermont Business Magazine U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) today released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced there will be no change to U.S. policy in Israel, despite humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, and press investigations showing a failure to end the humanitarian crisis and comply with international humanitarian law: “Accepting ‘small steps’ and empty promises won’t cut it when the devastation created by Israel in Gaza—using U.S. taxpayer funded bombs—is causing a calamity. Human rights and aid organizations made it well known to the Biden Administration this situation isn’t improving in a sustainable way. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is catastrophic and has only deteriorated since Israel began its bombing campaign."

Vermont Business Magazine Tomorrow will mark 30 days since the Biden Administration, through the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, expressed deep concerns about the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, requesting urgent and sustained actions by the Netanyahu government to help innocent civilians. The situation for the people of Gaza has gotten worse in the past month, not better. “Under international humanitarian law, Israel has an obligation to provide and allow—not impede—the free flow and facilitation of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Leahy Law and other U.S. laws are clear: all countries are held to the same standard, and all countries that receive U.S. security assistance must follow international humanitarian law. Israel is no different."

by Representative Laura Sibilia (I-Dover) In October, I announced my campaign to be Vermont’s next Speaker of the House. Today, after an election that eliminated the House supermajority, I want to acknowledge the challenges we face, share why I’m stepping forward and outline my vision for how the legislature can shift priorities and address Vermonters’ most urgent needs. Affordability is a big worry for most Vermonters right now. Inflation, housing costs, rising insurance premiums, and property taxes have become unsustainable. Our education and healthcare systems are severely strained and need both stabilization and reform. These challenges are compounded by climate adaptation, emerging from COVID-19, shifting demographics, and an increasingly globalized economy. Vermonters deserve responsive leadership. With voters clearly demanding meaningful progress, I’m running for Speaker to break the current gridlock and set an agenda that delivers on Vermonters’ needs.
