Vermont Business Magazine Resonant Link, a Burlington-based developer of a transformational wireless charging technology for medical devices and electric automotive fleets, has raised a $9.3 million seed round, led by The Engine, the venture firm spun out of MIT that invests in early-stage Tough Tech companies. New investor Volta Energy Technologies also participated in the round, alongside previous pre-seed investors including: Emerson Collective, Scout Ventures, Urban Us, and FreshTracks Capital.

Other recent grants to local non-profits will support services for seniors, the purchase of a pop-up tent for outdoor recreation, and assistance for veterans.

Gas prices to continue rising; drivers can save up to $250 per year by shopping around

Vermont Business Magazine Americans’ wallets have been hit hard by high gasoline prices, now about 50% higher than they were a year ago and forecast to potentially hit $4 per gallon in the coming months. GasBuddy, the leading fuel-savings platform providing North American drivers the most ways to save money on gas, has released a new study that found the best and worst days of the week to fill up in order to maximize savings. Gas prices today in Vermont are averaging $3.44/g, up 5 cents from last week, up 9 cents from last month and up $1.04 from last year.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife Waterfowl hunters who did not remove their hunting blinds from the waters of the state earlier must do so before February 15 on Lake Champlain or May 15 on inland waters according to a reminder from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. The 2022 Vermont Watershed Grants Program is now accepting applications for projects that protect, restore and enhance the state's lakes, streams, rivers, and ponds. For 2022, $70,000 is available to fund three categories of projects. The three categories and the maximum amount for each project type are: education and outreach ($5,000), planning, assessment, inventory, monitoring ($3,500) and on-the-ground implementation ($10,000). The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is pleased to partner with the Association of Vermont Conservation Commissions (AVCC) to announce a new handbook designed as a resource for Vermonters serving on municipal conservation commissions.

Vermont Business Magazine A new report by Zutobi an online driver's ed prep platform has ranked Vermont #1 out of the 50 states, for having the most readily available EV charging points. Vermont reportedly has 123.6 charging points as compared to the lowest state Louisiana with only 8.3 charging points. Vermont ranks 10th in the percent of EVs among all vehicles. The report also details the states with the most and least number of EV charging points, information about the number of electric vehicles per states in the US, the number of registered EVs, the percentage of vehicles that are electric and an overall U.S. score of EVs.

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Health today is reporting 677 cases of COVID-19 for Tuesday. Cases in Vermont last week plummeted by more than 3,000—a decrease of 40%. In the last two weeks, cases have fallen 56%. However, the VDH today reported three additional deaths for 545. Hospitalizations, which health officials have focused on as a key indicator, edged down to 88. They had been running over 100 the last few weeks.

Vermont Business Magazine United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the Department is investing $1.4 billion to help a diverse rural America keep resources and wealth right at home through job training, business expansion and technical assistance. The programs these investments are being made through are part of a suite of business and cooperative services that are projected to help create or save more than 50,000 jobs in rural America through investments made in fiscal year 2021. This includes $9.4 million in Vermont ($3.9 million) and New Hampshire.

Scattered Outages Possible Due to Snow Loading Especially in Southern Vermont, GMP Urging Customers to Stay Alert to Changing Conditions

Vermont Business Magazine Forecasters are calling for a storm to bring at least one foot of snow across most of Vermont starting early Thursday through Friday afternoon. Some of the snow may be heavy and wet along with the possibility of icing, especially in the southern part of Green Mountain Power’s (GMP) service area, and that could take down trees and power lines. GMP is urging safety for customers as some scattered outages are possible and any travel could be difficult during this regional long-duration storm.

Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont now ranks among the top 100 public research universities in the United States, according to newly released data from the National Science Foundation (NSF). In the most recent edition of the NSF’s annual Higher Education Research & Development (HERD) survey, UVM moved up a dramatic 16 places, ranking 85th in the nation among 415 public research universities—a clear indicator of the university’s commitment to expand its research portfolio in recent years.

Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott and Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray today issued statements following a press conference held by a bipartisan group of elected officials, veterans, and Scott Administration officials in support of eliminating the state income tax on military retirement pay. Scott has pushed for this since becoming governor, but legislative leaders have resisted passing such a bill. Vermont is one of a just a handful of states remaining that fully tax military retirement pay.
