Antonio Pomerleau, Chairman and Founder of Pomerleau Real Estate, has been selected as the 2012 Citizen of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. Pomerleau’s achievements will be toasted at a celebration on November 27, 2012 at the Hilton Burlington Hotel.
The prestigious Citizen of the Year Award, now in its 49th year, highlights the work of a Vermonter who has bettered the state through self-sacrifice, service and volunteerism.
Pomerleau has taken creative business innovations through the decades by continually focusing on, in his words, “doing things a little differently than everyone else.” Finding success in self-service grocery stores, shopping centers and real estate, Pomerleau has brought an abundance of economic activity to Vermont.
Among his philanthropic contributions, Pomerleau has donated $1 million each to St Michael’s College, the Greater Burlington YMCA, and to the Irene Recovery Fund. With a keen ability to recognize growth opportunities, his donations are often matches of monies which are raised by the public to incent people to get involved. Most recently, Pomerleau revitalized an entire mobile home park in Shelburne, VT and provided residents the chance to remain a community after Tropical Storm Irene devastated their livelihoods.
John J Neuhauser, President of St Michael’s College, sums up the longevity of Pomerleau’s contributions by stating, “Tony not so much ‘gives back’ but rather ‘gives forward’ to help those generations of Vermonters who will assume business leadership and philanthropic roles.”
"Honoring Mr Pomerleau with this award showcases how business strength can directly translate to vibrancy in our communities” said Betsy Bishop, President of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. "Mr Pomerleau has built a strong foundation for Vermont's future growth through innovative business practices, but also through immense community goodwill."
