Vermont Lake Monsters announce 2014 field staff

The 2014 Vermont Lake Monsters field staff will include a pair of new coaches with the additions of former Major League players David Newhan as manager and Tommy Everidge as the team's hitting coach, the NY-Penn League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics announced with the release of the full coaching staffs throughout the Athletics organization by Oakland.
Newhan and Everidge will join 2013 Lake Monsters pitching coach Craig Lefferts and athletic trainer Toshi Nagahara. Newhan replaces Rick Magnante, Vermont's skipper during its first three seasons as an affiliate of the Athletics (2011-13), and Everidge replaces 2013 hitting coach Lloyd Turner. Both Magnante and Turner will hold the same positions in 2014 with the Single-A Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League.
Newhan, the 14th manager in Lake Monsters history, joins the Athletics organization after serving as the hitting coach for the San Diego Padres-affiliated Lake Elsimore Storm in the Single-A California League since 2011. A 17th round selection by Oakland in the 1995 draft, Newhan made his Major League debut with San Diego in 1999 and spent parts of eight seasons with the Padres, Phillies, Orioles and Mets before ending his Major League career with the Astros in 2008.
A .253 career hitter with 23 home runs and 120 RBI in 413 career Major League games, Newhan's best season came with Baltimore in 2004 when he hit .311 with 66 runs, eight homers and 54 RBI in 95 games. The 40-year-old Pepperdine University Hall of Famer is the son of former LA Times baseball writer Ross Newhan, who received the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) in 2000.
Everidge, who was drafted by the Athletics in the 10th round of the 2004 draft and hit .224 with two home runs and seven RBI in 24 games for Oakland during the 2009 season, will be making his debut as a Minor League coach. Everidge spent seven years in the Athletics minor league system, hitting .276 with 121 home runs in 800 games, before playing for the independent Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League in 2011 and 2012 before retiring.
Lefferts returns for his second season as pitching coach after the Lake Monsters finished with the second-best team ERA (3.06) in Vermont history in 2013. With a 12-year Major League career from 1983 to 1994, Lefferts rounds out an all-Major League experienced staff for the 2014 season.
