Each year, with endowed funds donated by Union Bank, Johnson State College (JSC) awards scholarships to students at JSC who show great promise of civic and business leadership and have excellent academic records, involvement in community service, and financial need. Recipients must live in one of the communities served by the bank. Awards are made both to traditional students and to part-time students enrolled in JSC’s External Degree Program.
Awards for the 2011-12 academic year were announced at the JSC Honors Convocation in May. Recipients are:
Daniel Aiken, a junior from Sheffield majoring in business management, who works as a resident assistant and a tour guide in the Admissions office at JSC;
Kathy Armstrong, a mother of two grown children and a part-time student from East Burke majoring in psychology, who has been a Fairbanks Museum Fellow and a recipient of the Herb Painter Volunteer Award from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports for Worksite Wellness, and is devoted to community service and education;
Amber Gillespie, a part-time student from Wolcott majoring in business management with a concentration in marketing and also earning a certificate in nonprofit management, a Dean’s List student at JSC and a former student at the Community College of Vermont (where she received the President’s Honor Award ), who volunteers for Salvation Farms, the Vermont Foodbank, and the Center for an Agricultural Economy;
Morgan Goodyear, a junior from Jeffersonville majoring in hospitality and tourism, who participates in the JSC Dance and Performing Arts clubs, has attended the New England Student Leadership Conference, and has held internships with the Stowe Area Association, the Lamoille Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Stowe Vibrancy Inc.; and
Kathryn Johnson, a senior from Hyde Park majoring elementary education, who helped lead the JSC women’s soccer team to many honors, including the All-Star Academic Team (for which she was personally honored for earning a 4.0 GPA), and who is a volunteer coach for the Lamoille Union Middle School girls’ team and for youth soccer clinics.
“Union Bank is very community-minded, and we are tremendously grateful for the support it has provided our students over the years,” said JSC President Barbara E. Murphy. A number of Union Bank employees – including the bank’s new president, David Silverman – are JSC graduates.
