Health care thought leaders Cortese and Landy appointed to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Board of Trustees

Dr. Denis Cortese, CEO emeritus of Mayo Clinic, and Laura Landy, president and CEO of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation, have been appointed to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Board of Trustees, Board Chair Wayne Granquist has announced.
“These are transformational times in health care and Dartmouth-Hitchcock is at the forefront of much of the change,” said Granquist. “The broad knowledge and experience that Denis and Laura bring to the Board will be invaluable as we consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
Dr. James N. Weinstein, CEO and president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, said: “Denis and Laura have been visionary leaders in meaningful reform of the U.S. health care system. Their work aligns perfectly with Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s commitment to creating a sustainable health system for our region and for the country. I am thrilled that they have agreed to serve on our Board.”
Dr. Cortese, who served as CEO of Mayo from 2003 through 2009, is Foundation Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), director of ASU's Health Care Delivery and Policy Program, and president of the non-profit Healthcare Transformation Institute, based in Phoenix, AZ.
Dr. Cortese currently serves on the boards of directors for Cerner Corporation, Essence Global Holding Corporation and Pinnacle West. His memberships in national and international organizations include: the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, where he served as the original chair of the Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care; National Associate of the NationalResearch Council; honorary member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (Mexico).
Dr. Cortese formerly served in the following positions: member of the health advisory board of RAND; member, and board chair of the Health Care Leadership Council in Washington, DC.; member of the Harvard/Kennedy Health Policy Group; member of the Division on Engineering and Physical Science (DEPS) of the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Cortese received a BS from Franklin and Marshall, an MD from Temple University, and residency training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases at Mayo Clinic. He was awarded an Ellis Island Award in 2007 and the National Healthcare Leadership Award in November, 2009.
Laura Landy, MBA, is president and CEO of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation in Morristown, New Jersey. She is founder and chair of ReThink Health, a Foundation initiative that works to bring new thinking to achieving better health, better care, and lower costs. ReThink Health's action-research projects develop models and tools to foster the leadership and environments required for successful innovation and sustainable change.
As president of Applied Concepts, a consulting firm she established in 1983, Ms. Landy brought business and strategic thinking to the dynamic interface between social issues and market realities.
Her efforts focused on helping health, higher education, financial service, and cultural organizations define and achieve their aspirational goals. Among her health-related activities have been a multi-year relationship with Pfizer, the redesign of New Jersey's local public health system, a partnership with AT&T applying emerging technology to healthcare administration, design of urban healthcare systems, and the creation of strategic alliances between health, business and cultural institutions.
Ms. Landy's expertise in entrepreneurship and corporate venturing led her to create and direct the Institute for Nonprofit Entrepreneurship at NYU's Stern School of Business, where she also taught and served as associate director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Ms. Landy has also been a member of the adjunct faculty of Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, the New School, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she served as interim director of the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship. She is the author of Something Ventured, Something Gained: A Business Development Guide for Nonprofits(ACA Books, New York, NY, 2nd Ed 1989).
The appointment of Dr. Cortese and Ms. Landy as members of the hospital board will be ratified with a formal election by the Assembly of Overseers at their next meeting.
