Dr. Greenberg recently moved to central Vermont from Bethel, Alaska where he was most recently employed as Emergency Department Director and Medical Director, Sexual Assault Response Team at the Yukon-Kuskowim Health Corporation. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, as stated on their web site, manages a comprehensive healthcare system on behalf of 58 federally recognized Tribes for 50 rural communities in southwest Alaska. The system includes community clinics, subregional clinics, a regional hospital, dental and optical services, mental health services, substance abuse counseling and treatment, health promotion and disease prevention programs, and environmental health services.
Dr. Greenberg is returning to New England where he grew up, did his undergraduate work and attended medical school. Raised in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Dr. Greenberg graduated from The University of New Hampshire, with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, magna cum laude. He continued on to earn his M.D. at Dartmouth Medical School.
Starting to move west, Dr. Greenberg did his Emergency Medicine Residency at The University of Michigan/St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He served as Chief Resident from July 2004 to June 2005.
After spending two rotations, one as a medical student and one during his residency, at Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, Dr. Greenberg was compelled to return to Alaska after finishing his residency. "It is really a great little hospital doing incredible work to meet the needs of a much underserved population," remarked Dr. Greenberg. "I was able to go out into the villages of Native Alaskans to consult, and with no specialists or surgeons on staff, I was called upon to perform a wide variety of services."
Despite the rewards of helping the indigenous populations of Alaska, with the birth of their second child, Dr. Greenberg and his wife found the pull of home-and civilization-too tough to resist. Dr. Greenberg was lured to CVMC by Emergency Department physician, Richard Taylor, MD. Greenberg and Taylor did their residencies together at the University of Michigan.
"Richard could not say enough nice things about the hospital and central Vermont," said Dr. Greenberg. "He told me I could keep on looking, but this was the place you want to be. And he was right. The small, family-oriented, non-profit environment that CVMC offers is exactly what I wanted." Dr. Greenberg is Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Pediatric Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation.
