Vermont Business Magazine WCAX has received an Edward R Murrow regional journalism award from the Radio Television Digital News Association. The annual awards recognize the spirit of excellence that Edward R Murrow made standard for the broadcast news profession. Reporter Jennifer Costa and photographer Robynn Beams received a first place award in the hard news category for their report, “Obit of an Addict.” The story focuses on a family’s decision to acknowledge their son died of an opiate overdose and to share the details of his struggle with addiction in his obituary.

“This story not only reveals the devastating impacts of the opiate crisis, but also looks at how the stigma of drug addiction has kept the crisis in the shadows for so long,” said WCAX News Director Roger Garrity.

RTDNA received more than 4,300 entries during the 2017 awards season.

"Remarkable journalism is being done every day in newsrooms across this country," said RTDNA Chair Vincent Duffy. "We're proud to recognize the most outstanding ways journalists are keeping the public informed, holding the powerful accountable and enhancing the quality of life in their communities."

WCAX-TV News competed with stations from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

WCAX-TV is the CBS affiliate in Burlington.
