Vermont Business Magazine Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) issued the following statements Monday after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that the House Republican plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act would raise the number of people without health insurance by 24 million.

"Throwing 24 million Americans off of health insurance, raising premiums for older low-income Americans, defunding Planned Parenthood and giving $275 billion in tax breaks to the top 2 percent is a disgusting and immoral proposal," Sanders said. "Last January, Donald Trump promised that his health care plan would provide 'insurance for everybody' that would be 'much less expensive and much better.' Now we know that was just another lie. The reality is that Donald Trump and Paul Ryan’s bill is not a health care plan. It’s a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthiest people in America. It must be defeated."
Seantor Patrick Leahy said in a letter to supporters: "The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office just released their report on Trumpcare, and their findings confirm that the bill would be an unabated health care disaster.
"If Trumpcare is passed, 14 million Americans would lose their health insurance coverage next year.
"In 10 years, that number would rise to 24 million Americans who would have their coverage stripped away -- and their health and lives threatened -- by Republicans' reckless plan."
