After windstorm hit region Wednesday, GMP sends crews to New York to restore power

Fri, 03/10/2017 - 1:18pm -- tim

Vermont Business Magazine More than 40 Green Mountain Power lineworkers, supervisors, and mechanics headed to Rochester, NY, friday afternoon to help restore power after a strong wind storm hit the region Wednesday. The wind also caused damage in Vermont. GMP restored 14,500 customers, within an average of two and half hours. Two days later, in New York, there were still 130,000 without power.

“With advanced planning, crews were able to quickly get the lights back on in Vermont, while our neighbors in New York sustained much greater damage,” said Kristin Carlson, Green Mountain Power’s Vice President of External Affairs. “We work hard to make sure our customers have reliable service, and we take great satisfaction in being able to help others when needed.”

Crews will stay in New York through at least Monday to help Rochester Gas and Electric restore power and make repairs to downed lines and broken poles, barring any need to bring the team back earlier to join with crews staying in Vermont. The mutual aid relationship between utilities is strong, and GMP is part of the North Atlantic Mutual Aid Group which covers from Canada to West Virginia.

“Much like local fire departments, utilities work incredibly closely when the chips are down. We have benefitted in the past from those close ties, and now it’s great to help those in need,” said Carlson.
