Vermont Business Magazine When Keurig Green Mountain Inc was bought last year in a blockbuster, $13.9 billion deal by European holding company JAB, it shortly thereafter severed its partnership with Coca Cola to market Keurig Kold, a home-based beverage system. Apparently its thirst for ice cold refreshment has not been slaked. On Friday, Waterbury-based Keurig quietly announced on its Website that it will develop a beer-making system with Budweiser, which also will include a variety of alcoholic drinks.
The Website press release states that Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) and Keurig Green Mountain have entered into a joint venture focused on the research and development of an in-home alcohol drink system.
The venture, the statement says, will bring together the expertise of both companies and will build on the Keurig Kold technology and system innovations and AB InBev’s brewing and packaging technology, and evolve them within the realm of the full adult beverage category, including beer, spirits, cocktails and mixers. The partnership will focus on North America.
“We’re thrilled to be moving forward with this joint venture and look forward to working closely with the Keurig Green Mountain team to explore the possibilities of what we can achieve together,” said Nathaniel Davis, CEO of the new venture. “We can’t wait to get started.”
"We are excited to partner with AB InBev to develop a new system for the adult beverage category. We look forward to combining our capabilities and technologies to deliver innovation for consumers," said Bob Gamgort, Keurig Green Mountain CEO.
The joint venture employees will come from the current AB InBev and Keurig teams and will be located in facilities in Massachusetts and Vermont.
A time-table for release of the new product was not announced.
The original Keurig Kold system with Coke focused on in-home soft drinks, with an eye toward competition with SodaStream. Mixers were also offered for one to add spirits to make cocktails. This new system appears to take the next step forward in making adult beverages at home.
