GMP prepares for storm with strong winds

Thu, 01/04/2018 - 3:46pm -- katie

Vermont Business Magazine Green Mountain Power is preparing for strong wind expected late this afternoon and tonight that could cause power outages. Damaging weather is expected across the state, and especially in southeastern areas. With severely cold temperatures expected to follow, GMP urges customers to be safe and prepared.

“We are very aware of the severe cold that will be following the wind storm, so are especially focused on restoring power as quickly as possible and keeping customers and crews safe,” said Dorothy Schnure, GMP spokesperson. “In addition to being prepared, customers should most importantly stay clear of any downed power lines, which could be carrying electricity.”

Outages in storms are frequently caused by cars and trucks sliding into poles, so the public is encouraged to stay off the roads, if possible, and to drive with extra caution.

“While outages are not expected to be widespread, customers should be aware of the risks of hypothermia as temperatures drop, particularly for the elderly and young children. People should seek alternate shelter if they are at risk,” Schnure said.

Green Mountain Power will provide updates on the storm on Facebook, Twitter and to the media. Customers may report outages and get updates through GMP’s text service or app, as well as calling 1-888-835-4672, or visiting GMP’s Outage Center page at
