LEDC sponsoring workshop on employee background checks and detecting employee embezzlement (March 21)
Hiring a new employee can have an impact on your business for decades – good or bad. How can you tell who will be a good addition and who will lie, steal or become violent? We will help you to learn and understand interview techniques, understand personal traits and use modern resources to conduct thorough, cost-effective background checks.
Embezzlement is a serious crime. Under Vermont statute, even a minor siphoning of funds or goods can be charged as a felony. Too often embezzlement goes undetected for months or years and can leave a business, non-profit or government body struggling in an already tough economic environment. Having good policies and practices in place can reduce the opportunities for employee theft and help your organization’s bottom line. Vermont was recently ranked highest in the nation for “Embezzlement Propensity Factor” making it critical for all business owners, managers and others responsible for an organization’s financial well-being to learn to detect and prevent employee theft and change the culture that makes this such a common occurrence in this state.
This workshop is being presented by Doug Babcock, President of Cygnus Security Consulting, LLC based in Jeffersonville, VT which provides comprehensive, real-world security assessments and solutions for small and medium sized businesses using a hands-on, user friendly approach. Mr. Babcock has over 10 years of experience in law enforcement, served in the U.S. Coast Guard and has been an EMT for several rescue squads, fire departments and emergency rooms. He holds an MBA from Champlain College. This is a joint presentation of the Lamoille Economic Development Corporation and the Vermont Small Business Development Center.
The workshop will take place on March 21st from 9 am until noon in the Community Room at Green Mountain Technology and Career Center in Hyde Park. The cost of the workshop is $25 and preregistration is required.
