CVOEO TO HOLD KARIBU FASHION SHOW TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PROGRAMS FOR NEW AMERICANS
WHAT: Karibu (Welcome) is a fashion show featuring New American models, African drumming and dance on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 7 PM Higher Ground.
This is a benefit event by New Americans for New Americans, and a great opportunity to learn more about and come together with our new neighbors in celebration of their culture.Models will be in traditional dress created by artisans from their own communities and their country’s music will accompany their runway walk.
The evening will open with the African drumming group Africa Jamono. Alex Hirsch from WCAX TV will co-host with CVOEO’s Sandrine Kibuey (formerly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo). At the finish of the fashion show, Africa Jamono will reappear, and a dance party with DJ will follow.
Many of the sponsors for this show are companies that employ or work with New Americans. The audience will be as diverse as the stage because New Americans have received free tickets and Champlain College Office of Diversity & Inclusion have provided tickets to students from other countries. Add to this the presence of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and the true message of Karibu (Welcome!) is fulfilled.
WHEN: Thursday, April 13, 2017 - 7:00 p.m. to midnight
WHERE: Higher Ground Showcase Lounge
WHO WE ARE: In 2016, the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) served more than 1,600 New Americans. The most recent refugee arrivals are from Bhutan and Burma. With each new population comes a unique set of needs, but common across all cultures is the need for the basics to survive in their new home. This is where our crisis programs come in to great demand, providing housing, heating fuel and food assistance. As people become acclimated and settled, however, they also need the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive: employment, financial literacy, tenant rights and responsibilities, housing discrimination, and tax preparation, to name a few of the program areas in which CVOEO provides further support.
